Today is 21st of April 2023 Want to help the community grow? Some differences between Stoicism and Buddhism, their practicality and impact.Buddhist philosophy and ancient Stoicism are two of human history's most influential philosophical, spiritual, and ethical traditions. While they differ in many aspects, both aim to help individuals achieve inner peace, freedom from suffering, and a fulfilling life. Here we will explore the differences between Buddhism and ancient Stoicism, and their modern application. Both traditions have much to offer in terms of self-improvement and inner peace. However, Stoicism is often seen as more practical and accessible due to its focus on practical application and focusing on what is within one’s control. Ultimately, it is up to the individual to decide which tradition is more suitable for their personal development. 1. Origin and Basic Tenets: Buddhism originated in India over 2,500 years ago, founded by Siddhartha Gautama, also known as the Buddha. According to the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism, suffering is a natural part of life, desire, and attachment are to blame for it, and suffering can be alleviated by eliminating desire and attachment, and the Eightfold Path, which consists of understanding, intention, speech, action, livelihood, effort, mindfulness, and concentration, can lead to the cessation of suffering. Ancient Stoicism, on the other hand, originated in Greece in the 3rd century BCE, founded by Zeno of Citium. The basic tenets of Stoicism revolve around the belief that virtue is the only good and vice is the only evil, that we have no control over external events but we can control our reactions to them, and that we should live in accordance with nature and reason.
“Being a stoic does not mean being a robot. Being a stoic means remaining calm both at the height of pleasure and the depths of misery.” Abhijit Naskar, author of 7 Billion Gods: Humans Above All 2. View of Self: One of the main differences between Buddhism and Stoicism is their view of the self. Buddhism teaches that the self is an illusion and that the ultimate reality is emptiness or non-self. Buddhism says our suffering arises from our attachment to the illusion of the self and the craving for its pleasures. In the Buddhist view, a person who has realized non-self can remain calm in difficult situations because they understand that their sense of self is impermanent and illusory. Stoicism, on the other hand, believes in the existence of the self but views it as a small part of the greater whole. According to Stoicism, we should focus on our inner virtues and live in accordance with nature, rather than seeking external pleasures and possessions.
“It is the nature of the wise man to reflect upon life to accept it with pleasure.” Epictetus 3. Practice and Techniques: Both Buddhism and Stoicism provide practical techniques and practices to help individuals achieve their goals. Buddhism offers meditation, mindfulness, and ethical living as key practices to overcome suffering and achieve enlightenment. Stoicism offers practices such as negative visualization, self-control, and living in the present moment as key techniques to attain tranquility and wisdom.
“To be a philosopher is not merely to have subtle thoughts, nor even to found a school, but so to love wisdom as to live according to its dictates, a life of simplicity, independence, magnanimity, and trust.” American philosopher Henry David Thoreau 4. Comparison of Practicality: When it comes to practicality and usefulness in modern times, both Buddhism and Stoicism have their strengths and weaknesses. Buddhism offers powerful techniques such as mindfulness and meditation that have been scientifically proven to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Buddhist teachings also emphasize compassion, empathy, and non-violence, which are essential values in today's world. Stoicism has also provided a powerful impact on meditation that has been proven in science to help, as it is a major influence on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, on the other hand, offers practical techniques such as negative visualization and self-control that can aid individuals to cope with adversity, build resilience, and achieve their goals. Stoic teachings also emphasize the importance of living in accordance with nature and reason. This can help individuals find meaning and purpose in their lives. In conclusion, Buddhism and ancient Stoicism are two powerful philosophical and spiritual traditions that offer practical techniques and practices to help individuals achieve inner peace, freedom from suffering, and a fulfilling life. While they differ in many aspects, both have their strengths and weaknesses when it comes to practicality and usefulness in modern times. Ultimately, the choice between Buddhism and Stoicism depends on individual preferences, goals, and values. However, both traditions offer valuable insights and tools for living a better life. |
